Based on HBOsEpisode 7 preview, thats the storyline the show follows, too.
The way I see it, we got two options.
Option one: We take the easy way out.
Its quick and painless.
Im not a fan of option one.
Were gonna turn into one of those things.

And a million ways we can die before tomorrow.
But we fight for every second we get to spend with each other.
Whether its two minutes or two days, we dont give that up.
I dont want to give that up.
My vote: Lets just wait it out.
You know we can be all poetic and just lose our minds together.
Though Ellie asks if theres a third option, Riley simply apologizes and says, Lets get outta here.
Only time will tell if HBOs adaptation portrays Ellie and Rileys tragic love story the same way, though.
